Philip Quirk, Oxford Street Profile, 2009-2011
Quirk’s Oxford Street Profile is a multimedia document of Oxford Street in Sydney, Australia. Intending his work to be both creative and functional, Quirk has allowed it to be published in a variety of different forms. While the book is,f or the artist, “the most appropriate way to show a scaled down linear view of Oxford Street,” a 2011 tablet-format article in the Sydney Morning Herald included a 32-panel image that the viewer could encounter by manually swiping the tablet. This “book of the future” reformats Ruscha’s questions about the portable and, significantly, tactile aspects of the printed book and poses them to a digital present.
